2018 Ministers Retreat Speakers

Bishop Joseph Garlington

Bishop Joseph L. Garlington, Sr., PhD  is the Senior Pastor of Covenant Church of Pittsburgh, a multiracial and cross-cultural community of more than three thousand members, which he founded with his wife, Barbara, in 1971.

For more than two decades, Covenant Church has been a model for racial healing and reconciliation for Reconciliation! Ministries International, an International Network of Churches and Ministries, INC, for which he is the Presiding Bishop. Reconciliation! Ministries spans the globe in representation with nearly a thousand congregations worldwide.

He is the president of Building United of Southwestern Pennsylvania, an ecumenical coalition of bishops in the Southwestern and Western Pennsylvania corridor. Through the synergy of this partnership with local and national financial institutions and foundations, they are beginning to see genuine fruit from President Bush’s faith-based initiatives in providing home ownership for low and middle income families.

As the visionary for Covenant Church, he launched an outreach to recover an abandoned school in Wilkinsburg, PA, that is now known as Hosanna House Community Center, which has become a world-class model for creative partnerships with government, business, foundations and the church. This and other numerous outreaches to the local and international community have positioned Covenant Church as a recognized leader in the faith-based community.

Bishop Garlington is an accomplished musician, recording artist, author and scholar, whose work touches thousands through radio and TV, through his weekly television broadcast, Something Fresh, through national and international conferences, through albums, books and articles. He is internationally recognized in the religious community for his work and ministry in many churches in South Africa since 1979.

His preaching and teaching ministry, known for its humor and deep insight, has made him a popular speaker at many national conferences such as Promise Keepers, the international men’s movement, where he has regularly addressed tens of thousands of men. Bishop Garlington regularly consults for pastors, churches and organizations that are eager to develop similar models of racial reconciliation and healing.

He is married to Barbara Williams Garlington, and together they share responsibility for seven children, thirteen grandchildren, two great-granddaughters and one great-grandson.

The 2018 Ministers & PK Retreat provides Ohio’s family of ministers and spouses (and their amazing kids!) an invigorating time away to recharge our batteries for the coming year.

Any Steeler fans out there? Our speakers this year are both high profile pastors from Pittsburgh: Bishop Joseph L. Garlington, PhD, pastor of Covenant Church and Jeff Leake, pastor of Allison Park Church. Many grew to love and appreciate Bishop Garlington’s powerful ministry as a regular speaker at PromiseKeepers events, and Jeff Leake has helped launch more than 100 CityReach churches. BONUS! Every minister/couple attending who registers by December 21 will receive a free copy of Pastor Leake’s newest release by GPH, Power for Life: Why Every Believer Needs to be Baptized in the Holy Spirit.

Our student ministries leaders have already been working hard to make the PK (Pastors’ Kids) portion of this year’s gathering extra meaningful for all our kids, ages 0–18. In addition to age-appropriate sessions for all children, those in grades 6–12 are encouraged to stay with their peers and leaders for the entire retreat, including housing and meals.

Ministers & PK Retreat is designed to heighten your connection to fellow ministers in ways that will have you spiritually lifted, laughing hysterically, and leaving with even deeper friendships that will grow in the years to come. Read on for all the exciting details, and we hope to see you this January!

Hey, Ohio PKs!

Just want to take a moment to say how much Lisa and I are looking forward to seeing all those in grades 6-12 at the 2018 Ohio PK Retreat at Kalahari! This event is a highlight of the year as PKs from all over Ohio come together, connecting and building friendships that will continue well past the weekend. PK Retreat is filled with great ministry times and lots of fun. We will have powerful worship, impactful preaching, and meaningful free time for connecting with each other.

Each day we will be having fun playing crazy games, eating meals together, and going to the awesome water park, just to name a few. I will also be having a special dinner with the high school seniors, which I totally love! For rooming, you can stay in your parents’ room at night or you can hang out with other PKs and youth leaders in PK hotel rooms if that’s what you want.

Kalahari is an amazing facility – if you’ve never been before, then get ready for lots of fun from the arcade, water park, and great atmosphere. As a pastors’ kid myself, I can tell you how much I appreciated events like this growing up. We hope you can join us at Kalahari with a group of amazing young people who know what it is like to live the life of a PK. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact myself (nortiz@ohioministry.net) or my assistant Amanda Majors (amajors@ohioministry.net) Don’t miss this retreat, and we look forward to seeing you there! FAQ’s

Teens have the option of staying in your room for a reduced registration rate or to stay in a room with other kids of the same age and gender. These rooms will be supervised by adult leaders many of which are youth pastors or PKs themselves.

It depends on whether or teens are staying with their parents. If your teen is staying in your room, then services and activities including the water park, PK Retreat T-shirt, dinner on Monday night and lunch and dinner on Tuesday are all covered.

If he/she is staying with the youth, everything above plus their room and breakfast on Tuesday and Wednesday morning are covered in the registration fee.

After teens check in at registration with their parents on Monday, they will also need to check in between 3:00 and 4:30 pm on Monday at the Registration Booth D in the hallway leading to Cypress to meet their leader. PKs staying in teen housing (not with their parents) will need to bring their luggage at that time.

Parents can check with our leaders at Registration Booth D in order to get in contact with their teen. Room leaders will also provide their cell phones to teens and parents during the check in process.

If your child has allergies or food sensitivities, please email us at oym@ohioministry.net so that special arrangements can be made with Kalahari.

Staff will not administer medication. Parent are responsible to ensure that students get the necessary medication. Teens may administer their own medication at the parent’s discretion.

Ill students will not be permitted to attend. This includes teens with a fever over 100⁰. Students must be fever-free for 24 hours prior to attending.

Although there is no specific dress code, we ask that parents use good judgement in deciding what a teen should wear at an event of this nature.

Who is Jesus?

More than two thousand years ago God sent Jesus Christ into this world. He became one of us, but he did nothing wrong. He showed us what God is like – merciful and kind. He healed the sick people, the blind were made to see, the deaf to hear, the lame to walk. Some people followed him, and to them he gave a new way of life – God’s way. But others hated Him because He was so good, and he exposed their evil ways.

He gave his own life as a sacrifice, a payment for our sins. He died on the cross to save us. Three days after he died, Jesus Christ came back from the dead. Now He lives in the power of an endless life to meet your need, to be your Saviour, to forgive your sins. Jesus Christ is the only one who can do this for you.

Why We Exist

The Ohio Ministry Network exists to encourage and support Ohio families, churches and ministry leaders. We strive to equip and resource churches and pastors to tell the world about Jesus.

However, if you've come to this site seeking answers about Jesus, seeking help in troubled times, or would like prayer, please contact us at the number below.

May God richly bless you today!
